An Early Review: Summer Anime 2009

Oh… gaccham…

Untitled-1

I did my research on the anime to be released this Summer 2009. But anyway, all I will  need to reviews are the series, not the continuations and OVA/Specials since I am lazy to do it.

But anyway, I am not particularly that excited in the summer release since nothing piqued my interest except Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei… Probably Umineko…

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Tokyo Magnitude 8.0

Information:

The series is set in Tokyo after an earthquake measuring 8.0 magnitude on the Richter scale shakes the city’s foundations and landscape, resulting in the Tokyo Tower, Rainbow Bridge and other noted landmarks falling. It will follow siblings Mirai and Yutaka, who were visiting a robot exhibition on Odaiba on the occasion of their summer holidays having just begun, as they struggle to reach their mother in their house in Setagaya, assisted by a female motorcycle deliverer named Mari.

Thoughts:

The art reminds me of Xam’d… but not quite. I don’t think that I will like this show. The plot might look good, but theory is different from practice and the trailer seems to tell me that way. However, I think that it is proper to check this show before judging whether it is bad or not. But of course, I think that this will be bad.

Canaan

Canaan

Information:

Anime adaption of the game 428. Type-Moon’s Nasu Kinoko and Takeuchi Takashi are in charge of the anime script and character designs. They also made the script and character designs for one of the bonus scenarios in the game.

Thoughts:

I’ve seen the trailer. The art reminded me of Shingetsutan Tsukihime. One girl looks like a different version of Arc with only different skin complexions, hair color, eye color, and a few minor features. I feel that I will come to like this show. This one better not pull of another Shingetsutan Tsukihime or else… Anyway, I liked the music.

Cobra the Animation: Rokunin no Yushi

Cobra the Animation: Rokunin no Yushi

Information:

A remake of the old 1980 series.

Thoughts:

I am not a fan of old school, much less an remake of an old school. Casshern sins didn’t work for me and I am not particularly interested in this one. Interest beats benevolence so I will never give myself a chance to watch this unless there are people who actually think that this is great. But for now, NO.

Element hunters

Element hunters

Information:

“In the year 2029, a massive land sinkage occurs in the Mediterranean Coast. All oxygen in a 3 kilometer radius disappears from the Earth’s crust.

Since that event, many chemical elements, such as oxygen, carbon, gold, molybdenum, and cobalt have disappeared from the face of the Earth.

The disappearance of the chemical elements has caused other things to vanish; forests, fields, buildings, ancient ruins, and even life itself.

Humanity soon fully realizes that everything is made from the chemical elements.

60 years later, the human population has been reduced to 1/10 of what is was during its peak period. After much research and investigation, the cause of the disappearance of the chemical elements is becoming clear. The chemical elements have been flowing to Nega Earth, another “Earth” which is located beyond the dimensional barrier.

A team called “Element Hunter” is formed to prevent the death of the Earth. All of the members are children who are 13 years old or younger. Only children, whose thought processes are more fluid than adults, can gain access to Nega Earth.”

Thoughts:

First off, I’ve had enough of chemistry. This reminds me of Shangri-la.

Second, a human body contains elements including carbon. And it is primarily common sense for people to realize that everything in this world is made up of chemical elements.

Third, people who are 13 years old and younger are much more crazy than adults.

Fourth, the clothes are unattractive.

Fifth, shota as a male lead is a big NO! But the orange-haired loli looks delicious.

Oh well… There can be no good science fiction from a no-good science.

Aoi Hana

Aoi Hana

Information:

Fumi and Akira were best friends when they were little, with Akira always looking after the crybaby Fumi, but that all ended when Fumi’s family moved away. Several years later, Fumi’s family returned, and she and Akira happened to bump into each other on their way to school. They became friends again, quickly slipping back into old patterns. Shortly after, Fumi began dating a cool, attractive upperclassman who, coincidentally enough, had ties to Akira’s current school, the prestigious Fujigatani Girls’ Academy.

Thoughts:

My opinion for this is the same as the manga… Not interested.

Spice and Wolf 2

Spice and Wolf 2

Information:

Continuation of the first season.

Thoughts:

Not interested. I have not watched the first season yet and I don’t feel like it. I don’t like furries except for the Wagaya no Oinari-sama furries in their bishoujo form.

Bakemonogatari

Bakemonogatari

Information:

Bakemonogatari centers on Koyomi Araragi, a third year high school student who is almost human again after briefly becoming a vampire. One day, a classmate named Hitagi Senjōgahara, who infamously never talks to anyone, falls down the stairs into Koyomi’s arms. He discovers that Hitagi weighs next to nothing, in defiance of physics. After being threatened by her, Koyomi offers her help, and introduces her to Meme Oshino, a middle-aged homeless man who helped him stop being a vampire.

The series tends to introduce only one new heroine per chapter, each involved with a different “apparition”. The events of the previous chapters play an important role in the subsequent ones. The series primarily focuses on conversations between characters; it contains a fair number of parodies of other series, as well as Nisio Isin’s trademark wordplay and metahumor.

Thoughts:

Shaft. So yea… I hope that I like this one. The art looks pleasant.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Umineko no Naku Koro ni

Information:

Umineko no Naku Koro ni takes place primarily in the year 1986, during the time frame of October 4 and October 5 on a small, secluded island named Rokkenjima 10 km around owned and lived on by Kinzo, the head of the wealthy Ushiromiya family. Kinzo is near death, and eight of his family members arrive on the island for the annual family conference, where the adults plan to discuss how Kinzo’s assets will be divided once he is dead. Also on the island are three family members who live there, five of Kinzo’s servants, and his personal physician. After the eight family members arrive, a typhoon traps them on the island, and shortly after, strange things start to happen and people start dying.

Thoughts:

Please be better than Higurashi. Please be better than Higurashi. Please be better than Higurashi.

Oh yeah, umineko means sea gulls… not sea cats. Etymologically speaking, it should be sea cats (umi = sea, neko = cats). ~uu…

Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Zan Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei

Information:

Continuation of the second season.

Thoughts:

Watching this show and loving it makes you a winner in life. Else, you’ll live in despair.

Hetalia Axis Powers 2

Hetalia Axis Powers 2

Information:

Continuation of the first season.

Thoughts:

How to make this show better:

1. Improve the jokes.

2. Turn all characters into female.

3. Improve art quality.

Taishou Yakyuu Musume

Taishou Yakyuu Musume

Information:

The first book in the series begins in Taishō 14 (1925) with Koume (小梅 ), the 14-year-old daughter of a Western-style restaurant owner, who commutes back and forth to an girl’s academy. One day during the commute, she is having a conversation with her friend who everyone calls “Young Miss” (お嬢, Ojō ). They decide to form an all-girl baseball team and have a match with a boys team. While the first volume can be read as a stand-alone work, the second volume does continue the story.

The second book in the series, Taishō Baseball Girls: Covered in Dust and Dirt (大正野球娘。―土と埃にまみれます, Taishō Yakyū Musume. Tsuchi to Hokori ni Mamiremasu ), is set in the summer of Taishō 14. Koume, Akiko, Manoe and the rest of the nine members of the Baseball Girls continue to face off against numerous all boy teams, and have trouble facing the fast balls thrown by them. To combat the anxiety they experience due to the difficulties of playing against more experienced teams, they decide to abandon the traditional baseball uniform in favor of a kimono style uniform and partition off the batters box so the other team can’t see what they are doing.

Thoughts:

Fap-able characters are enough points. I hope they are.

Umi Monogatari

Umi Monogatari

Information:

The “transforming magical girl action” story centers on Marin and Urin, two “pure” sisters who live alongside the fish in the sea, but yearn to be in the world beyond the water and above ground. One day, a beautiful ring falls in the middle of the sea, and Marin and Urin retrieve it. The two decide to leave their waterbound world for the first time to deliver the ring. After an arduous journey, they come across an isolated island where a high school girl named Kanon lives. The encounter between Marin and Kanon — the maiden of the sea and the maiden of the skies — awakens a hidden power as the world is threatened by an enveloping darkness.

Thoughts:

Plot is good. But what I think shines in this show might be the art. I love the art. But of course, we need to see how can ZEXCS stay consistent on the art. Please don’t be another Chrome Shelled Regios.

Fight Ippatsu

Fight Ippatsu

Information:

The story revolves around Puragu or Jūden-chan, a mysterious office lady (OL) who came to our world from a parallel world to “charge” up dejected people.

Thoughts:

A fanservice a day keeps the shinigami away.

Sora no Manimani

Sora no Manimani

Information:

In the story, Saku Ōyagi (Tomoaki Maeno) is a quiet bookworm who moves back to his former hometown as a high school freshman. He meets his childhood friend, Mihoshi Akeno (Kanae Itō), although a traumatic incident long ago had left their friendship in an awkward state. Despite this, Mihoshi brings Saku into the astronomy club she founded, and this sets the stage for the slapstick romantic comedy that ensues.

Thoughts:

No to astronomy. Yes to slice of life.

Needless

Needless

Information

The action gag comedy with “bishōjo x violence” is set in 2130, when large swaths of Japan have been quarantined as polluted “Black Spots (BS)” in the aftermath of World War 3. However, there are people who have settled behind the massive walls of the Black Spots, where they have developed mysterious powers. The city people on the outside have a label for the Black Spot people they have ostracized: “Needless.”

Thoughts:

I’m fine with this one. At least the premise sounds decent, maybe.

Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou

Yoku Wakaru Gendai Mahou

Information:

The story revolves around Koyomi Morishita, a clumsy high school freshman girl who is often mistaken for a grade-schooler because of her shortness. Koyomi becomes a disciple of Misa Anehara, a 25-year-old graduate student who happens to be one of the most powerful modern-day magicians.

Thoughts:

I don’t feel like watching it… Oh well, I think that I should try watching since the premist is not that bad compared to Element Hunters. Still, I choose the violet haired girl.

Kanamemo

Kanamemo

Information:

The story centers on Kana Nakamichi, a middle-school girl who had already lost her parents and just recently lost her only remaining relative, her grandmother. As a result, she ends up living and working at a newspaper delivery office. Everyone else living at the office are all charming, self-assertive bishōjo. The manga follows Kana’s daily life in the fast-paced yet joyous environment.

Thoughts:

Mediocre plot. I don’t think that the show will be enjoyable even if it is slice of life.

Geijutsuka Art Design Class

Geijutsuka Art Design Class

Information:

The slice-of-life manga revolves around five freshman girls in a high school art class.

Thoughts:

I hate art. And this feels like Hidamari Sketch all over again.

Princess lover

Princess lover

Information:

Teppei Arima is a second-year high school student who lost both of his parents in a traffic accident on their way home from a family trip. His grandfather, Isshin Arima, happens to wield the puppet strings in Japan’s vast economy and demands that Teppei becomes his successor as the head of the Arima Group. To prepare for his debut into high society, Teppei enrolls in an elite academy for the scions of the rich and powerful.

Thoughts:

Where have I heard plots like this? Hmm.. Oh I know, 9342342 visual novels and anime. Unoriginality pains me. This usually ends up being downright failure. That’s why visual novels should never have an adaptation if they can’t be consistent. Harem? The harem that I only approve is the harem in Hayate no Gotoku. Still, what makes people stick to the anime with unoriginal settings like these is the art. At least the character looks fap-able.

Seitokai no Ichizon

Seitokai no Ichizon

Information:

The series, which is also called Hekiyō Gakuen Seito-kaigi Jiroku (The Records of the Hekiyō Academy Student Council’s Activities), revolves around a private high school whose student council is chosen entirely by popularity vote. Because of this, Ken Sugisaki is the only male representative, in the otherwise all bishōjo student council, that may enter the “sacred sanctuary” of the council’s meeting room. At the behest of Council President Kurimu Sakurano, Sugisaki records the minutes of the council meetings, which devolve into daily conversations about the students’ lives and interests.

Thoughts:

The female looks tsundere according to my tsundere radar. And another harem… Phew, the only thing that makes a harem good is a fap-able characters. The characters should be like that or else I would be wasting my time watching the show… Oh well, I watch anime to waste my time anyway.

—–

The others:

No thanks. They look like those new animes last Spring like Higepiyo which never got that much popularity since they fail to have an interesting characters or plot…

—–

But anyway, it looks like I will be enjoying some OVA.

One of them is the OVA of Negima wherein they try to animate the part where Nagi and Negi’s possible mother meet. Nagi’s days in the Crimson Wings.

15 Beautiful Girls Adrift looks like a good fanservice… I’ve seen their site long time ago and the character looks good.

Minami-ke OAD must not disappoint me.

——

Oh well, I think this is where I should stop. I’m over 2300-2400 words already.
